Know Your Rights – Balance Billing & Surprise Bills

Understanding Balance Billing: You are protected from unexpected or excessive medical bills under California state law and the federal No Surprises Act.

You are not responsible for balance bills when:

  • You received emergency care from an out-of-network provider

  • You were treated by an out-of-network provider at an in-network facility

  • You were billed more than your standard in-network copay, coinsurance, or deductible
